27th Biennial International Conference, Pakistan Paediatric Association

The Developmental Behavioural Paediatric Society (DBPS) in collaboration with Pakistan Pediatric Association (PPA) and the Developmental-Behavioral Pediatrics (DBP) Expert Group participated and hosted two highly engaging scientific sessions at the 27th Biennial International Conference, PPA from 31st October – 3rd November, 2024. 

The conference themed “Leading the Change: Innovation in Child Healthcare,” showcased groundbreaking discussions and collaborative efforts in pediatric care. The first session focused on Developmental-Behavioral Pediatrics, where eminent national and international speakers explored critical topics such as Attention-Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD), Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD), socio-emotional challenges in children, and the impact of screen media on child development. The session provided valuable insights and fostered meaningful discussions aimed at improving care for children with developmental and behavioral concerns.

The second session, centered on Allied Health Sciences, featured a dynamic panel discussion titled “The Power of Collaboration: A Multidisciplinary Perspective in Managing Children with Speech Delay.” Experts from diverse disciplines shared their perspectives and emphasized the importance of collaborative approaches in addressing speech and communication delays, highlighting how multidisciplinary teams can optimize outcomes for children.

These sessions underscored the importance of innovation, collaboration, and evidence-based practices in advancing child healthcare and enhancing support for children with developmental and behavioral disorders.

Workshop on The Happiness Toolkit: Skill Development in Children by Different Needs held as part of 27th Biennial International Pediatric Conference 2024

This workshop aimed to provide the attendees with a practical “Happiness Toolkit” — a set of resources and strategies that can be used to create a more supportive, inclusive, and nurturing environment for children. The happiness toolkit included several self care skills to promote and support wellbeing and positive mental health in children. 

The workshop was attended by doctors, allied health professionals, and educators from various institutes from all over Pakistan. By the end of the session, attendees were better prepared to implement interventions that promote both the skills and emotional well-being of children, fostering greater independence and social integration.

Pre-Conference Workshop on "Genetics: Solving the Mystery of Inheritance"

This pre-conference workshop delved into the role of genetics in understanding inherited conditions in children with developmental delay. The session highlighted the journey of genetics at the hospital, tracing the evolution of genetic research, diagnostics, and patient care over the years. Speakers at the workshop included Prof Henry Houlden (UK) and Prof Vincenzo Salpietro (Italy), as well as national facilitators from the department of Developmental-Behavioural Paediatrics at the Children’s Hospital, Lahore. 

Key topics included the challenges and considerations of managing families with consanguinity, which increases the risk of genetic disorders, and the importance of genetic counseling in guiding families through diagnosis and treatment options.

Seminar on "Autism and puberty: A less explored transition"

The seminar on “Autism and Puberty”explored the unique challenges faced by individuals with autism during adolescence. Experts discussed how puberty affects autistic children, covering topics such as emotional regulation and social communication. The seminar also focused on strategies for supporting families and caregivers, addressing issues like hygiene, and mental well-being. The session concluded with a Q&A, providing practical insights for professionals and families navigating this critical developmental stage.

A seminar conducted on "Children with Feeding Difficulties- A multidisciplinary Approach"

This seminar was conducted by Dr. Debbie Kramer-Roy, an occupational therapist, and it focused on the complex nature of feeding challenges in pediatric clients.Topics included identifying the underlying causes of feeding issues, such as sensory sensitivities and motor skills, and implementing collaborative strategies for assessment and intervention. The seminar emphasized the importance of a team-based approach to provide comprehensive care and improve outcomes for children with feeding difficulties.

Workshop conducted on "Management of Hearing impairment in children"

The “Management of Hearing Impairment in Children” workshop, conducted by the department of developmental paediatrics, focused on the developmental and behavioral aspects of caring for children with hearing impairment. The session highlighted the importance of early intervention in speech, language, and social development, with a focus on behavioral strategies for fostering communication skills. Topics included identifying developmental delays, supporting language acquisition, and addressing behavioral challenges related to hearing loss. The workshop emphasized a multidisciplinary approach, combining medical, therapeutic, and educational strategies to support the holistic development of children with hearing impairment.

The workshop on “Unmasking Autism Spectrum Disorder” at the University of Child Health Sciences, The Children’s Hospital, focused on raising awareness about the often-overlooked aspects of autism. It aimed to highlight how individuals may mask their symptoms and present differently, leading to delayed diagnoses and support. Experts discussed the challenges of recognizing autism in those who may have developed coping strategies to conceal their difficulties, and the importance of comprehensive assessments. The workshop covered strategies for early identification, understanding the impact of masking on mental health, and providing tailored interventions to improve outcomes. Participants gained valuable insights into promoting a more accurate understanding of autism and supporting individuals who may be under-recognized or misdiagnosed.

Advocacy Workshop on "Learning Disorders in Children"

In light of Dyslexia Awareness Month, the Department of Developmental & Behavioural Paediatrics organized a Pre- Conference Workshop, 27th Biennial International Pediatric Conference, 2024 on “Learning Disorders in Children”, at the Children’s Hospital, University of Child Health Sciences. The workshop highlighted the red flags, assessment, management and educational strategies for children with learning disorders.

Awareness walk on "World Autism Day" University of Child Health Sciences, The Children's hospital Lahore

2nd April 2024

The Autism Awareness Walk at the Children’s Hospital brought together staff as well as clients to raise awareness and promote understanding of autism. The event saw participation from key hospital personnel, including doctors, nurses, therapists, and administrators, all walking in solidarity to support individuals with autism and their families. The walk highlighted the importance of inclusion, advocacy, and early intervention, fostering a sense of unity and shared commitment to improving the lives of those affected by autism. The event was a meaningful display of support and raised valuable awareness for the cause.

Professional Training

1. ECD Workshop Multan

The department of Developmental and Behavioral Paediatrics conducted  a workshop on “Early Childhood Development (ECD)” at the Children’s hospital, Multan. The workshop aimed to equip attendees with necessary knowledge and skills to promote optimal child health, detect early signs of developmental delay, and address developmental concerns early on.

2. Developmental screening LGH

Developmental Behavioral Pediatric Society in collaboration with the University of Child Health Sciences conducted a workshop on “Early Screening for Developmental Success” at the Pediatrics 

Department of Lahore General Hospital, Lahore. The workshop equipped participants with the knowledge and practical skills to screen children with developmental delay using SHAMAQ Developmental Screening Tool (SDST).
